New Zealand-born cellist Edward King is Professor of Violoncello at the Leopold Mozart College of Music at the University of Augsburg. A laureate of the IX Witold Lutosławski and Markneukirchen International Cello Competitions, he also received a special prize from Krzysztof Penderecki for his interpretation of the composer’s Divertimento at the Penderecki International Cello Competition.
Following his studies with James Tennant, Prof. Julius Berger, and Prof. Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt, Edward has pursued a multifaceted career as performer, educator, and curator. Known for his versatility and wide-ranging repertoire, he is drawn to projects that reimagine the classical canon through historical, contemporary, and interdisciplinary perspectives. His recording of Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, with Onutė Gražinytė, was lauded by Gramophone Magazine: "This performance [...] is one of the finest I’ve ever heard; it walks the narrow line between subtlety and strength."
Frequently invited to serve on juries and artistic panels, Edward is a passionate pedagogue who gives masterclasses and workshops internationally, supporting music education initiatives in Italy, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Lithuania, the UK, and among indigenous communities in New Zealand. He is a founding member of hear now berlin, a post-genre contemporary music ensemble, and a member of the O/Modernt Chamber Orchestra. Edward plays a modern German cello built by Robert König in 2017.
