Britten’s song cycle, Les Illuminations, opens with the striking words: ‘I alone have the key to this savage parade.’ In these shocking times, the finale of this year’s festival asks whether music can provide solace and a path forward. Complementing Britten’s settings of Rimbaud’s verse are Bach’s inexhaustible Art of Fugue and Strauss’ lament for a world in ruins, Metamorphosen.
