An evening of O/Modernt crossings interlaces Britten’s travels across Europe in his Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge with a sprinkling of works by British rock and pop icons Radiohead and Sting. Crossing the Atlantic in the company of the émigré Stravinsky, we visit the crucible of modern pop music. Steve Reich’s mesmerising rhythms purify the allure of pop, while tracks by the metal band Dream Theater reveal the essence of prog rock. The theme of crossings is encapsulated in Bryce Dessner’s Ahyem – a meditation on flight and passage – and Caroline Shaw’s Entr‘Acte, which takes us to the far side of Alice’s looking glass.
