A South Carolina native and one of three daughters to Korean immigrants, Meesun Hong Coleman completed a Bachelor’s in composition at Princeton University and a Masters in violin
at the Juilliard School. She subsequently went to Berlin as a Fulbright scholar. Her plan was to stay one year..
Over two decades later, Meesun Hong Coleman is professor of violin at the Bruckner Universität Linz, guest professor at the Mozarteum Salzburg, concertmaster of Kammerakademie Potsdam, Haydn Philharmonie(Austria), member of the Camerata Bern, and conductor. She is also a senior artist at the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove and the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont.
As a sought after concertmistress, she guest leads and directs orchestras all over Europe, including the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Stuttgart
Chamber Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Academy of Ancient Music in Berlin (on historic instruments), among others. Solo and chamber music festival appearances include
Salzburg, Lockenhaus, Budapest Festival Academy, Gstaad, Luzern, Edinburgh, Aldeburgh, Ojai, and Rheingau, and in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall, Suntory Hall, Vienna Musikverein, Beijing Performing Arts Center, and the Berlin Philharmonie. She has also performed for President Bill Clinton, and has worked closely with artists such as Isabelle Faust, Steven Isserlis, Sir Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Nicholas Harnoncourt, and Patricia Kopatchinskaya with whom she recently released an acclaimed recording of Pierrot Lunaire.
